Amber Can Read : May 2017

Another linkup? Don’t mind if I do!

Amber Can Read

I’m a librarian and my job is to just sit and read all day.

I’m a librarian and people think my job is to just sit and read all day. File that under “misconceptions about my profession”. The truth is, I read a lot less than I used to. I can’t imagine what has changed in my life in the last year that has cut into my reading time…

I love to read, so I decided to join a linkup that I found recently where people share the books they’ve read in the last month. I’m starting to find that posting about things I want to achieve helps keep me more accountable, so I hope that this will help me read more books instead of scrolling through social media or other time wasters!

Alright, now that the long intro is out of the way, let’s get to it! This linkup occurs on the second Tuesday of the month, so I’ll be posting about what I’ve read from that day to the second Monday of the next month. Yep, I felt like everyone needed to know that…

Books Read This Month : 4

Books 1 and 2 : A Picnic with Monet and Dancing with Degas both by Julie Merberg – One of my co-workers gave Charlotte a set of board books called the Mini Masters Boxed Set. It included four books about famous artists, and each of those books features their art and rhyming narrative. These are such a neat way to introduce Charlotte to art (and let’s be honest, they taught me a few things too!). We read these one morning while she was eating breakfast. We need to read the other two in the set!

Book 3  : Dad is Fat by Jim Gaffigan – I don’t really know anything about him other than the commercials he did for Chrysler (and I totally had to look up what car company it was…see how memorable those ads were for me…). I’ve never seen his whole “Hot Pockets” thing, but he referred to it approximately 3,000 times in this book. The only thing he talked about more was how many children he and his wife have. I read this book because I was going to participate in an online book club where I post my favorite quote on Instagram, but I didn’t enjoy this book at all and had a hard time finding a favorite quote. Needless to say, I won’t be joining that book club!

Book 4 : A New Hope : The Princess, The Scoundrel, and The Farm Boy by Alexandra Bracken – Oh. My. Goodness. I know everyone in my life is probably sick of me talking about this book, but I really, really liked it! It’s a novelization of Star Wars Episode IV (the first film released but not the first film in the series). It’s written more the juvenile/young adult audience, but I think that helped me understand it even better! Those of you who know me in real life know that my husband likes Star Wars just a little bit. I, on the other hand, have always been a little confused by it. This book helped me clear up some of the confusion, and I was sad when it was over. I’m also sad that she hasn’t written books about the other two films in the original trilogy. Come on, Alexandra! I highly recommend this one!

Has anyone read anything good lately? Let me know so I can add them to my Goodreads list!

Glossies Made Me Do It : May 2017

Back in March, I participated in a cool linkup called “Glossies Made Me Do It.” I completely missed it last month, so I’m glad to be back at it!

This month’s post is a little boring, but it’s also practical. Our car insurance company sends out a magazine, and I flipped through it at lunch today. One of the articles in it talked about discounts that the company offers. I won’t mention the name of the company, but here’s a clue…

After reading that, I wondered if there were any other discounts that we could get each month. I looked through their website and found that they offer a bundle discount if you use them for your car and home coverage. Since we do, I had to ask about it!

Sadly, it’s not offered in our state for some strange reason, but I did see the other discounts that we receive each month. I would’ve never thought about looking at this if I hadn’t read that article and wanted to find something to post about for this linkup. Maybe I should try these money saving tips more often…

Baking: Nothing! I wanted to make banana bread a couple of weekends ago, but I couldn’t find a recipe that didn’t involve 435 ingredients.

Listening (to): Boy bands from my teenage years. All of the “It’s Gonna Be May” memes lately have made me miss N’SYNC!

Loving: All of the new things that Charlotte is discovering how to do and how her personality is really starting to develop. She’s been full of kisses lately too, which I really love!!

Planting: Ideas in my head about projects…okay, that one was a bit of a stretch! I (eventually) want to plant a garden with just watermelon…sweet, delicious, wonderful watermelon…

Remembering: To write things down in my planners and on my desk task pad at work. I can’t be trusted to rely on my brain anymore!

Guys Behind the Blog : April 2017

It’s time to hear from Will again!

This came up on my Google Photos memories! Hard to believe how fast a year has gone by!

1.) What are you most looking forward to about spring?

Will – The thing in spring I was most looking forward to has already come and gone.

Me – Her birthday?

Will – Yep

2.) What’s on your spring cleaning to-do list?

Working on my game room, along with the rest of the house.

3.) What was your favorite spring break ever?

The only spring break trip I ever went on was to DC with my dad, but I did have a lot of fun.

4.) Do you play Easter bunny? What’s your favorite kinds of things to leave in their baskets?

Since Charlotte was just a year old this year, we really didn’t, but I would to leave her little toys when she’s older instead of just a bunch of sugar and candies.

5.) Would you rather be allergic to beer or junk food?

Will – Junk food

Amber – Why?

Will – You know I like my beer

Amber – Junk food would be better for me because then you could tell me I have to keep it out of the house or else you will have an allergic reaction! Ha!

Accomplishing: Prep for Charlotte’s birthday party! It’s going to be a small party with immediate family, but things still have to be done!

Feeling: Kind of blah and meh. Nothing is wrong necessarily, but I just feel like I’m kind of just bumping along. Does that make sense?

Needing: To take clothes out of the washer. I feel like if I don’t do a complete load of laundry every day, then all of the sudden, there’s a mountain of dirty clothes!

Practicing: Uh, not sure about this one! Practicing being a couch potato? 😉

Pinning: Hairstyle ideas. I like my cut, but I feel like I’m in a hair rut. I guess that goes with the blah feeling I talked about earlier. Anyone have any go-to hair tutorials or sites or anything like that?

Guys Behind the Blog : March 2017

I’ve been blogging and writing for a few years now, and although I’ve talked about my husband here a few times, I’ve never really introduced you guys to him. That’s why I was really excited to find this linkup called Guys Behind the Blog! Every month, they have a few questions that they have people ask their husbands. This was a fun one because it let us have an interesting conversation, plus I love asking “would you rather” questions.  There’s also a Kids Behind the Blog linkup that I’ll have to participate in when our child’s vocabulary expands beyond the few words she can say! 😉

GBTB March 2017
Ladies and gentleman, meet my husband, Thor…I mean, Will

1.) Would you rather have your dream job and make less money or have a job you hate and make tons of money?

Will – We know the answer to this one

(Amber note – earlier this month, he left a distribution center job that he was really unhappy in to start work as a security guard, which pays less, but it’s so up his alley that it’s a little scary. This question made us laugh because it’s our life now!)

2.) Would you rather play a hero or a villain in a movie?

Will – Villain or an antihero

Me – What do you mean by that?

Will – Antiheroes still do good, but they don’t care about the rules

Me – So, you want to be Deadpool?

Will – Yes…or The Punisher. The Punisher has a lot of guns.

(Amber note – he was a little too giddy when he said that)

3.) Would you rather always have to say everything on your mind or never be able to speak again?

Will – I always say what’s on my mind anyways.

Me – Don’t I know it…

4.) Would you rather go back in time and meet your ancestors or go into the future to meet your great grandchildren?

Will – I think it would be cool to go back in time and meet my ancestors

5.) Would you rather swim in the Arctic Ocean with nothing but a swim suit (no wet suit) or walk through the desert in the middle of the summer having to wear sweat pants and a sweat shirt?

Will – Polar bear club

Me – You know, only one of us has done a Polar Bear Plunge…

Bonus question:
Would you rather live like a king but have no friends and family or be homeless with your friends and family?

Me – I know the answer to this one

Will – What do you think?

Me – You’d rather be homeless with your friends and family

Will – That is true

Me – It would save us a lot of money every month. Plus, if you’re The Punisher, no one will mess with us…

Glossies Made Me Do It : March 2017

In another post, I talked about how I want to join more linkups. If you’re not familiar with what a linkup is, it’s basically when a blogger or a group of bloggers all post about the same thing and leave links to each others’ blogs on the host(s) blog(s). Clear as mud for anyone? 😉 I’ve been participating in the monthly “Currently” linkup since January, and now I’ve found another fun and interesting one to join, called “Glossies Made Me Do It.”

A little backstory: I was reading a blog that I found on a Currently linkup, and it had a post called “Glossies Made Me Do It” about an idea from a magazine that she tried. There were a couple of other bloggers who did it, and then they decided to make it a monthly linkup. I think this is a fun one because I’ve always enjoyed reading magazines and saving ideas to try “someday,” but I rarely ever do anything beyond that. Now I’ll be forced inspired to actually try some things!

Alright, with that out of the way, let’s get to it!

The library I work at recently added a magazine browsing app called Flipster, and I have really enjoyed it! Earlier this week, I loaded 5 magazines on my iPad! Can you imagine how much space 5 actual magazines would’ve taken up in my purse? (Librarian note – many other libraries have Flipster or similar services so check your library’s website to see if they do!).

I was browsing the March 2017 edition of Glamour magazine when I found my inspiration : an article called “How to Look Less Tired”.

Sign. Me. Up.

A couple of the ideas in the article were ridiculous. Get more sleep? Wow, earth shattering, life-changing info right there. But, one portion suggested faking it with makeup application. I’m pretty makeup challenged, but the suggestions in this article seemed easy enough, even for someone like me.

Here I am in my natural state last Friday morning:

TGIF, y’all…

Also, let’s take a minute to admire my majestic morning hair:

The article outlines a number of steps to go through, including using an undereye cream/primer, a couple of different concealers, and eyeshadow suggestions. I didn’t have all of the necessary makeup/tools, so I followed along the best I could.

Here are my final results, in the glowing natural light of my car in the driveway:

A few answers to the burning questions I know you all have:

  1. Yes, my earrings are cassette tapes
  2. Yes, I do need something else to cover that spot on my forehead
  3. Yes, my hair actually did look better before I tried to “style” it

So, do I look less tired? Maybe. I felt like I had a lot of makeup on, and at one point in the day, my undereye concealer looked like it was melting off my face. Always pleasant.

I’m glad I tried these techniques, but it probably won’t become a regular thing for me. Now on to looking for next month’s idea!
